Ever been on a roll? Ever been in the zone? Ever been on fire? Athletes use these terms all of the time when everything seems to be going their way. It’s the power of the streak. What happens to your mental state when you get on a roll… when you start a streak? You say to yourself… “Bring it on.” “I’m invincible.” “There is nothing I can’t accomplish.” You begin to become a part of the streak itself. You build on the momentum that is being created and is growing each day. Your attitude is so inviting of what is coming your way that you manifest even more positive results. You believe the streak will never end!
Of course the reverse is true. I heard a radio show this morning in which the hosts were talking about the difference in mindset between two teams caught up in a race for first place. One team appears high as a kite. Momentum has swung their way. Even though the team is in second place, they feel they are on a roll. They feel the momentum is theirs and that mentality breeds continued success.
Wouldn’t you think the first place team would feel like they were the team in the driver seat? Well, they did… earlier in the year. That’s when they were on a roll, on a win streak… when things were going their way. But recently, the team has hit another type of streak. A losing streak. They have lost 14 of their last 17 games and at one point last week had lost ten games in a row. One of the players was asked, “what has this meant to your team’s mental toughness?” The player answered, “Toughness? What’s that? We start to wonder when… heck, if we will win again. “OMG…What will happen next?” is heard an awful lot in our dugout.” Interesting how the mind works. Believe good things are in store for you and good things come your way. Believe bad things will come your way and guess what… they will. In either case, what you believe, will become your reality.
How important is your mental game? Ask Tiger Woods. Tiger’s mental game is in the crapper, and as a result, the best golfer in the world hasn’t won a golf tournament in over a year. Nobody on this planet would question Tiger’s physical abilities but when you are not on top of your mental game, when you start to expect the bad rather than the good, the bad results are going to come find you. You see examples of this every day.
So how do you get in the zone? On a roll? Catch fire? The streak is a powerful thing but it all starts in your head. You have to believe your deserve it, that you’ve earned it. You have to believe it’s your time.
Is it your time? If you even have to ask the question… you’re not ready. Force yourself to “get in the zone” and the power of the streak may soon be all around you!
Have a great week-end!
