During these past few weeks, I’ve been paying close attention to people’s enthusiasm levels. I have literally seen it all. People almost sleeping at their desk, those who speak in such a depressed, monotone voice that they almost put you to sleep. Others have such unbridled enthusiasm, it makes you wonder what they ate for breakfast because you want to go out and get some.
Yesterday, on my way to the bank, I was stopped at a red light, just down the street from the office. I found myself “drifting off” in a less than enthusiastic mental state. I then noticed this guy on the corner. You’ve all seen him…or someone like him. He’s the guy with the big arrow sign that stands on the corner and gets paid eight bucks an hour to wave that big arrow at passing traffic. This guy actually put a smile on my face. He was truly entertaining to watch. You talk about enthusiasm. All of a sudden I straightened my posture, and had this sense of guilt about not having that level of enthusiasm about what I was doing. I thought to myself, “How awesome is it that this guy… making minimum wage… has such passion and enthusiasm about his job?” I doubt it’s because he has an amazing job. My guess is, it’s because he chose to work that way. By the way… I’ve also noticed that the “less than enthusiastic” arrow waivers are usually and quickly out of a job.
Enthusiasm is so essential to our success… and sometimes it’s something that has to be developed. Each of us is enthusiastic about something… even if it’s Friday afternoon. We need to become enthusiastic about our path to greatness, or it’s almost certain that we won’t reach our goal.
Enthusiasm is something that can be compared to a fire. As a fire starts to burn, it may be only a few flames — but with enough time and fuel, a fire begins to burn hotter and hotter, kindling other flames as it grows.
A technique shared by many motivational experts is the “fake it until you make it” technique. In this technique, a person acts as if he/she already has a particular skill, ability, or positive attitude. Before you know it, the real thing begins to follows easily.
If you’re having a bit of a problem getting started on the enthusiasm bandwagon, just act as if you’re enthused. You’ll soon get caught up in it.
Enjoy your weekend, keep your energy level high and have fun!
