Wouldn’t it be nice if we all had a life map to follow?
Wouldn’t it be nice if we all had a GPS receiver for the soul.
It would be nice if we could go to Google Maps, put in “where should I go in life,” and it’d print out a step-by-step set of directions to follow, your whole life long.
But life isn’t made like that. Most of us spend a significant amount of our lives, just figuring out where we want to go. Some of us never look for a destination… We figure that one road is as good as another.
Some poor souls spend their entire life lost… wandering the back roads of life, never knowing where they want to end up, moving from one dead-end job to another.
Life just doesn’t come with a roadmap to follow… it doesn’t have an atlas to refer to, and it sure doesn’t feature step-by-step directions, complete with exit signs and road markers.
You see, life is a do-it-yourself thing.
But here’s the good news. Just like you can go to Home Depot and learn how to install a water heater yourself, so you can learn how to make your life better.
How? Well it’s simple: other people have traveled your road before you have.
Some of them might give complete, accurate advice – where to turn, what roads to take, what destinations are open to you. Others may tell you of the hazards to watch for – particularly the “don’t do what I did” variety. You can do research to find out where you might go. You can learn skills to become who you need to be.
But ultimately, you are the one who must choose your destination. You are the one who must choose the turns and the rest stops. And unlike the real world, you are the one who sets the speed limit.
Get going. Have a nice trip.
And have a nice weekend.
