During this past week, I had great intentions. One of which was… I intended to finish the book I am currently reading, “Credibility.” The bottom line is, I got caught up in the things that consume our day, and didn’t accomplish what I intended.
So much for “the best of intentions.”
The truth is that “best of intentions,” as they’re generally called, will only get you so far. God may look at your heart and your thoughts on judgment day, so we are told, but until then, we have to settle on what we can deliver.
And that’s where delivery wins out – in this life at least – “best intentions” only go so far. In life, we are judged on what we actually turn out.
You may know that you’ve got what it takes to do something – you may know you can fix that fence, mend that relationship, help that person, lose that weight, kick that bad habit, call your mother, make good on those promises, accomplish those dreams – but until you actually get busy and do it, it’s all for naught.
In other words, what you deliver matters more than what you intend to deliver.
It’s perhaps unfair that this should be – there are a lot of people who deliver a result, but do so in an inadequate way. Given the proper amount of time, many of us could deliver a much better result – if we ever get around to it.
We need to remember that adulthood is when you finally realize that if you want something done, you’re going to have to be the one to make it happen – and get the praise or the punishment for the result.
Life is a series of tests, and one of the most major tests is how you deliver on what you can do. Let’s hope all of us (me included) remember that even the “best of intentions” just doesn’t do.
I know it may seem like I’m being a little harsh with myself, but that’s not the case. I just like to share the fact that I have high standards. High expectations. I know that for the most part, I have great intentions. But at the end of the day, what I actually deliver on those intentions is what will define my successes.
I intend to have a wonderful weekend. Hope you do too.
