Your reputation is like your shadow. It follows you everywhere you go. It’s even there in the darkness, though you can’t see it. Your reputation, in some ways is your brand. You create it over time with your words and your actions… sometimes in your inaction. Think of someone you know who you have great respect for… someone who you would like to emulate. Why do you think of this person? Because in your mind, they are reputable. They have earned a great reputation over time by behaving a certain way.
Now think about the greatest home run hitter of all time, Barry Bonds. Also, the greatest hitter of all time, Pete Rose. How are their reputations? They are both tremendous talents on the field who achieved hero status with many fans. Off the field, they tarnished their reputations by cheating and then lying about it. Neither of them will likely ever be inducted into the Hall of Fame even though they are two of the greatest players ever to hold a baseball bat.
Cherish your brand… your reputation. Be kind to people. Be a person with strong ethics and always do the right thing… even when no one is looking.
Have a great weekend.
