I think most of you know that I consider myself to be a profound lover of food. I mean, I’m not the guy you will usually see turning away from a good meal. Having said that, I like to think my taste in food has become a bit refined over the years. I’ve tried just about every type of cuisine out there and have become very much in tune with the types of food I enjoy most.
If you have ever attended my class on “Lead Generation,” you have most likely heard my little food analogy, in which I discuss how deciding the right prospecting technique, is similar to going through a buffet line. Let’s break down the similarities:
- Abundance of Options: Just like a buffet offers a wide variety of dishes, the real estate industry provides numerous prospecting techniques. Cold calling, door knocking, expired listings, FSBO’s, online marketing, networking, business to business, open houses and referrals are among the many options available to real estate agents.
- Individual Preferences: Just as people have different tastes in food, real estate agents have varying preferences for prospecting techniques. What works well for one agent may not be suitable for another. It’s important to find a method that aligns with your personal strengths, interests, and communication style.
- Trial and Error: Trying a little bit of everything at a buffet mirrors the trial-and-error process in real estate prospecting. Agents may experiment with different techniques to see what resonates best with their personality and target market. It’s through this experimentation that they can identify their preferred methods.
- Personal Enjoyment and Success: Loading up on food you enjoy at the buffet is similar to focusing on prospecting techniques that you genuinely like. When agents enjoy the process, they are more likely to invest time and effort into it, increasing the likelihood of success. It’s about finding the sweet spot where personal enjoyment meets professional effectiveness.
- Ignoring External Opinions: Just as one should not be swayed by others’ opinions about particular dishes at a buffet, real estate agents should be cautious about blindly following advice from others. What works for one agent may not work for another, and personal preferences play a significant role in determining success.
- Methodical Exploration: Perusing the buffet line methodically and trying a little of everything is akin to a real estate agent exploring various prospecting techniques. This systematic approach helps agents gather data on what works and what doesn’t, allowing them to make informed decisions based on their experiences.
In both cases, the key is individualization and finding what resonates best with personal preferences and strengths. The process involves exploration, experimentation, and the wisdom to trust one’s instincts in selecting the most effective and enjoyable strategies. All this talk about prospecting is making me hungry.
Have a great weekend everyone.
