In a market like ours, talent alone is no longer the separator. Licenses are easy to get. Tools are everywhere. Information is abundant.
Professionalism is what truly differentiates you.
Professionalism shows up in the details:
· How quickly you return calls, emails and texts
· How prepared you are for appointments and meetings
· How clearly you set expectations
· How consistently you follow through
· How you respond when something goes sideways
Clients may not understand every step of the real estate process, but they absolutely feel professionalism. They feel it in your confidence, your organization, your tone, and your ability to guide them calmly through important decisions.
Early in my career, about 40 years ago, I was fortunate enough to have a well-respected industry veteran take me under his wing. One day he pulled me aside and said:
“Hey kid, I love your enthusiasm and your energy. I’d trade all my experience to have that back. Over time, you’ll gain experience and a strong grasp of this business. But as you do, be mindful of two things.
First, never lose your enthusiasm, and always try to raise the energy level of any room you walk into.
Second, always approach this business with the utmost professionalism. If you treat this business with the respect and professionalism it deserves, it will be good to you. You can’t fake professionalism. People notice when you’ve missed a belt loop.”
That advice stuck with me then, and it’s proven itself to be true time and time again.
Especially in today’s environment, consumers are more selective. They’re not just choosing an agent, they’re choosing a professional they trust to represent them well, advocate for them, and handle details they may never even see.
Here’s the truth: Talent may open the door, but professionalism earns trust. And trust builds great, lasting businesses.
Let’s continue to lead with it. Oh, and don’t miss a belt loop.
