In sports, they call it a gut check.
It’s late in the game. Your legs are heavy. You’re exhausted. You’ve already given everything you thought you had, and somehow, the game is asking you for more.
That’s when conditioning takes over.
Business has its own version of the fourth quarter.
There are times when the workload seems relentless. The days are long, the decisions keep coming, people are depending on you, and there doesn’t appear to be a timeout anywhere on the horizon. You’d love to catch your breath, but there’s simply too much at stake.
Those are the moments when we have to gut it out.
Athletes prepare for these moments by conditioning their bodies. As professionals, we prepare for them by conditioning our minds.
I believe stressful periods have a way of separating average performers from elite performers. Not because elite performers don’t get tired, frustrated, or overwhelmed. They do. The difference is that they’ve trained themselves to continue performing when those feelings arrive.
They understand that exhaustion is temporary. They don’t confuse being tired with being finished.
Sometimes these stretches genuinely feel like a battle. And battles create fatigue.
One technique I’ve found helpful during those periods is to look beyond the battle and picture what victory looks like.
For me, that often means having a vacation planned months in advance. When I’m deep in one of those stretches where the calendar is packed and the demands seem endless, I can picture that destination waiting for me. I can see the moment when the work is finished, the problems have been solved, and I can finally exhale.
It gives me something on the other side of the struggle.
Your version of that reward may be completely different. But I think there is tremendous power in being able to see beyond whatever challenge you’re facing today.
Because here’s what experience has taught me:
The fourth quarter doesn’t last forever.
Neither does the difficult season.
And sometimes success comes down to something remarkably simple: when everyone else is looking for a timeout, you’re conditioned enough to stay in the game.
Keep going. Gut it out.
Victory may be closer than it feels.
